Caring for Books

Books made by hand are generally going to be more resilient than books made by machine, but in either case: the nicer you are to them, the longer they'll last in the condition you bought them in.

Depending on your location, the moisture of that environment may cause slight curling in the board and papers. If so, the materials are adjusting to your environment, and if you left the journal under weight in that environment for 24-48 hours, that issue should resolve itself. This acclimation process is something many libraries conduct when getting new books for their shelves.

Did you scuff or mark your book cover? Don't put soap or water on it! Get a rubber cement pick up and gently rub the mark off of the area. You may not be able to get all of it, but, most of the time, it gets the job done!

We take great care in the packing of our orders and offer UPS and USPS shipping options. UPS will usually go out in 1-2 days. USPS orders will go out the next Friday.

HANDMADE ITEMS

If extreme circumstances cause the order to be damaged along its way to you, we can offer a discount for the inconvenience, but we are often unable to offer total refunds or replacements due to the handmade nature of our products.

Single Day Workshop — Designing for Print

Time: 10 am – 5 pm (PST) one hour lunch break at noon.

This one-day course is for people learning Adobe InDesign and wishing to learn more about the preparation of their files and how they are used in the printing and book making process. We will cover bleed, creep, file types, profiles, exporting, imposition, and marks, while following in the studio a roll out of how the digital becomes physical in these various processes. We will cover some elements in Illustrator and Photoshop. Students will leave with a deeper understanding of where their files go and how they’re used, ideally expanding the options available to them for making creative decisions in book design. 

This course is most useful for those who already have Adobe Creative Suite or are soon to be using it. 

 

Matt Austin is a designer, bookbinder, and publisher based in Los Angeles, California. He founded Candor Arts, an imprint and production resource for artist books, which has since closed and evolved into the Candor Collective—a QTBIPOC-led network of antiracist arts workers developing systems of care together while advocating for one another's rest and well-being. He is currently a member of the Candor Collective and is the founder and studio manager of For the Birds Trapped in Airports.
